Thoughtfully crafted in 2025
The Matera Lounge is inspired by the 1964 chair design for Hotel Parco Dei Principi by Italian Designer Gio Ponti. This piece emits Italian modernity from its core which is why I named it after the beautiful and historic city of Matera.
It was important to keep the streamlined Italian look of
the original lounge, but I pushed the piece by breaking up
the leg & arm parts and softened the profiles to better reflect my own style. This decision creates negative space and allows the silhouette of the upholstery to suspend within the hardwood frame. The brass inlays act as dainty suspension and connect the features in a playful and
elegant manner.
A MESSAGE FROM GIO
"The most resistant element is not wood, is not stone, is not steel, is not glass. The most resistant element in building is art. Let's make something very beautiful." --GIO PONTI
I chose this quote because I believe the value of making beautiful things leaves a longer lasting impact than the medium itself. Every artist living within a generation is leaving as much a legacy for themselves as they are for the defining culture as a whole. The piece may eventually decay but the art carries on, as an evolution from the past, for the future. Just as I was inspired by the beauty Gio left, I hope to inspire beauty in other's work.
