SERIF LOUNGE CHAIR (v2)

SERIF

LOUNGE CHAIR v2

Thoughtfully crafted in 2023

This is the second variation of the Serif lounge chair where I changed some dimensions for ergonomic purposes and added a cutout to the hind legs for visual relief. The goal of the Serif Lounge chair was to communicate a sense of principled elegance in form and detail. More importantly, a well crafted and contemporary design that would feel as established as it did new-fashioned.

GRAPHIC GUIDES PRODUCT

Many of my creative decisions are made using graphic design fundamentals, especially as it relates to object form. This is why it made sense to pull from the established messaging of the serif typeface family, a typography that represents reliability and trustworthiness. This gave me the options to play with various features of the chair by adding and playing with “tails and feet”. I could have went a literal direction by adding serifs to the base of the legs but instead decided on a finial taper. The signature focus would inevitably be to cap the arms and back rest with a rounded terminal-style claw & ear, then dot them with black inlays. The joinery would also highlight contemporary manufacturing techniques buy using puzzle tabs to join the connecting parts. After each side is produced, the stretchers are glued in place, the piece is sanded & oiled, then tediously hand woven with danish cording.
